On October 21, the Güizzo Frutas Frescas S.A. company began the commercial harvest of the earliest cherry varieties produced in Argentina. These varieties are harvested from week 42 up until week 05.
The firm established in Mendoza more than 40 years ago has specialized in the production of early cherry varieties and markets them mainly abroad (65%) and in the domestic Argentine market (35%).
"We started the season with the varieties of the Royal series developed by the Californian geneticist Zaiger, which we can start harvesting in the northern area of Mendoza from week 42," stated Nicolas Güizzo Giudice, Technical Manager of Güizzo Frutas Frescas.
The company currently manages the production of cherries in 45 hectares distributed mainly in the northern area of Mendoza, in other productive areas of the province, and in the northwest of Argentina.
"Our 5-year goal is to be able to advance the beginning of harvest to week 41 in Mendoza, and even to week 40 in other areas of northern Argentina where the company is already carrying out tests with varieties that require less winter cold," stated the engineer Nicolas Güizzo.
“Our biggest issue is the availability of plant material. There is limited availability of graft carriers and varieties that can adapt to the different soil and climate conditions in the different areas we have been studying. It's possible to produce early cherries that require less cold in Mendoza and in certain micro-zones of central-north Argentina," he stated.
