The Chilean fruit's Southeast Asian market diversification strategy is making progress

The President of ASOEX, Ivan Marambio, the General Manager of ASOEX, Miguel Canala-Echeverria, the General Secretary of ASOEX, Rodrigo Gallardo, and the Agricultural Attaché of Indonesia with an impact in the countries of Southeast Asia, Fernando Balart, held a virtual meeting in which they analyzed the joint work strategy for the opening of new markets for Chilean fresh fruit and how to improve the current entry condition of some products. This work is also carried out together with the Minagri, SAG, Odepa, and Chilean embassies in the countries of Southeast Asia.

"ASOEX is in the process of advancing the positioning of our fresh fruit exports in markets that are strategic for the industry to continue growing. Southeast Asia is a very interesting market, especially because it has more than 600 million inhabitants, countries with growing economies that are driven by a thriving middle class that appreciates consuming fruits and other imported products. The meeting with Fernando Balart was very productive. We were able to analyze the actions in which we are advancing and the ones we must continue pushing," stated Ivan Marambio, president of ASOEX.

"It was a very pleasant and important meeting. We got to meet the new president of ASOEX and we also addressed the issues of the strategic agenda that we have been working on with this association. There is a lot of interest in opening new markets for Chilean fruits and we have been focused on that. For example, there is very good news about the progress we've made to export cherries by air to Vietnam, as we currently only send them there by sea. We are in the last stage of this negotiation, after which we would move forward with the negotiations for the opening of exports of kiwis and blueberries," stated Fernando Balart.

According to the attaché, Chile currently sends apples, cherries, and table grapes to Vietnam.

"Opening new markets, especially in Southeast Asia, is not only important but also strategic to diversify our fruit markets. We have been focused on achieving this and we'll continue to make progress together with our authorities and representatives in the world," stated Miguel Canala-Echeverria.

The manager of ASOEX also highlighted that progress is being made in opening Chilean citrus in Indonesia. "We have managed to accredit in Indonesia - once again - our National Safety System, which allows us to enter our fruits through the port of Jakarta. This area concentrates Indonesia's population and economy, so being able to enter our fruits through this port improves our competitiveness compared to the fruits from other origins," he stated.

Chile currently exports table grapes, apples, pears, kiwis, cherries, and blueberries to Indonesia.

Balart said that they would work to open the Philippines for the country's blueberries and Thailand for its pears.
