With colder temperatures at this end of the year, the weather in Egypt is favorable for red onion and garlic production, and promises a good quality harvest, according to Ralph Nakal of producer Tomna.
"Although it is difficult to comment on volumes before the actual harvest in January, we expect a stable level of volumes. We have been able to maintain the same area planted as last year, despite rising costs," said the Egyptian producer.
In fact, the increase in energy costs, and the devaluation of the Egyptian pound has posed a challenge to Egyptian producers, some of whom have had to reduce their cultivated area by up to 70% this year, according to Ralph Nakal.
Tomna's next season's production of garlic and red onions will be available from January 2023, and is destined for the European markets, Jordan and Brazil.
In the meantime, the company is meeting its demand through its newly opened branch in Chile, with a volume of 1200 tons of garlic destined to the USA, Canada and Brazil.
