Headquartered in the United States, Terra Fresh Exports ships their products from and to 65 countries around the world. One of the commodities that’s in season right now for the company is plums. They are grown in Turkey, both for the domestic market as well as Middle Eastern and European markets.
“Turkey has two main regions for growing plums, and we source from both regions,” says Görkem Ali Özbay with Terra Exports. The Adana-Mersin region in the South of Turkey grows early varieties that are available starting early July. Harvest of plums grown in the Manisa-Canakkale region starts a little later, but between the two regions, plums are available from early July until mid-November. Export quality plums usually hit the market the last week of July.
Turkey’s suitable climate for growing plums has resulted in a wide range of plum production in the country. Volumes are large enough to meet demand from the local market as well as exports. “About 50 percent of production stays in the domestic market and the remaining 50 percent is exported with Russia, the EU, and Middle East being key destinations,” said Özbay.
Demand for plums is high. Although it was an efficient season in terms of production, the season is winding down. With volumes gradually decreasing, available volumes are smaller than demand.
