The Australian cherry market is strong at the moment due to a late start and low volumes.
“The low volumes in the run up to Christmas have resulted in strong prices domestically as well for export,” said Sam Visala from Sai World. “We have also started shipping other stone fruit and the fruit is looking good, however the supply will be very up and down this season. Different varieties had different pollination times and it is clear to see that when it rained during the pollination period the yield on that fruit is much lower. One week we will have good volumes and the next volumes will be low.”
Sam explained that this is challenging when filing programs, but that buyers know the issue facing growers.
“Every market is a bit slow at the moment, we are trying to focus on retailers and those who supply the retailers, it is important to supply top quality to all of our customers. Chinese New Year is very important within the industry especially to those who supply Asia. We are well prepared to supply other markets to keep the product moving as there might be a glut after Chinese New Year.”
As well as the Asian markets Sai World also export to Canada, Philippines, India and Dubai.
“We have to look after all of our customers in good years and bad years. I think this season will have peaks and troughs; it will be an odd season as every orchard will vary in production. This week’s production is not due to last week’s rain.”
