Early Lunar New Year limits Ataulfo mango promotions

Demand is anticipated to be strong for Ataulfo mangoes from Mexico which start production this month.

“There is more and more volume every year on Ataulfo mangoes. Sometimes the pricing is a little less but they can sell so much of it because of the demand for them,” says Elena Kong of distributor Love April.

This Champagne brand of mango, which is also known as the honey or yellow mango, continues to be popular with consumers because of a few reasons: the fruit is a less fibrous variety and the seed is also smaller than the seeds of other mangoes, which means there’s more fruit pulp. The smaller size can also make the mango easy to peel.

January production
The season, which will see more production this year, is starting in Mexico at the end of January. “We are normally targeting the Chinese New Year with these mangoes but because it is earlier this year, we won’t be able to get mangoes for that,” says Kong. (Lunar New Year this year is January 22.) “Some early mango is already at the market but not much at this moment.”

Availability of honey mangoes stretches until June or early July with the peak season happening largely in April but also possibly into early May. “The production moves throughout Mexico--there are three regions. It starts in Chiapas and then moves to Nayarit and then to Sinaloa,” says Kong, adding that pricing is getting increasingly competitive on these mangoes.
