The Egyptian spring onion season has been smooth so far. However, thanks to the weather conditions, challenges in terms of availability might be coming up soon, says Mai Yassin, export manager at Egyptian fresh produce exporter Stars of Export: “At the moment business is still stable for us, we’re doing the regular quantities for spring onions, and quality is still what we’re used to. However, the overall quantity will decrease over the coming weeks, as the weather conditions have damaged a lot of areas already. In other areas that were not affected by the weather, the quality isn’t good enough. As a result, available volumes for export will becoming lower.”
As demand is still stable while availability is going down, Yassin notes that prices have gone up recently as a result. “Recently the prices for spring onions have increased. For good quality onions, buyers will see price increased of 25 or even 30 per cent. As the available quantity for good quality onions will be lower in the next period, it is possible that prices will increase even more than it already has, but we can't know until that actually happens. We’ll have to see how the situation has developed once we return from Fruit Logistica,” she concludes.
Stars of Export will be exhibiting during Fruit Logistica. You can find their stand in Hall B / A-81.
