Lytone Enterprises tested the proprietary LytoFresh® with broccoli supplier Fortune Growers

“We help to build up a sustainable and eco-friendly preservation for broccoli supply”

Fortune Growers and Lytone Enterprise Inc. teamed up for post-harvest broccoli trials and the result was fascinating. Dr. William Chang, CEO and founder of Lytone Enterprise, shared the story.

“Fortune Growers is a leading supplier of produce throughout North America and the world,” says Basilio, “We, at Lytone Enterprise, have been developing post-harvest preservation technology for worldwide suppliers such as Fortune Growers for over 25 years. Together we set out to revolutionize the broccoli industry.”

Fortune Growers recently tested the proprietary LytoFresh® system developed by Lytone. “The system includes a series of proven technologies to delay discoloration, prevent withering, and preserve the overall quality of fresh cut broccoli. During trials with Fortune Growers, it was observed that the shelf life of fresh cut broccoli could be extended by several weeks without the use of flake ice.”

According to Dr. William Chang, the experiment was conducted using industry standard practices as the control. Temperature in the storage room was maintained between zero and one degrees Celsius. The trial used several items that confer different treatment doses and different packages, just to test the best conditions for the preservation purpose.

“The experiment clearly shows that the broccoli treated with LytoFresh® was in better condition than the control. The trial was continued through 42 days, at which point the untreated broccoli had to be disposed of. Even after 42 days broccoli treated with LytoFresh® was still in acceptable condition,” Dr. William Chang further introduces.

“It is a milestone for the industry, that by using LytoFresh® system, fresh broccoli producers indeed will no longer need to pump tons of flake ice into packed cartons for long-distance transportation, saving broccoli producers time, water, labor, and electricity. We hope this new application will certainly contribute to a more sustainable and eco-friendly supply chain,” said Dr. William Chang.

The use of LytoFresh® is not just limited to broccoli. “LytoFresh® has applications in dozens of other fresh produce markets; it's also useful to growers, packers, and retailers of fruits, vegetables, cut flowers, exotic crops, and ornamentals. We have an established product line and database within the LytoFresh® system to help customers both big and small.”
