The Association of Hass Avocado Producers of Peru (ProHass) has forecast that the country will export 624,000 tons of avocado in 2023, i.e. 12.5% more than in 2022. Carlos Paredes Rosales said that this amount is almost twice as big as the 338,549 tons that the country shipped out in the 2018 campaign.
“The important thing is that this volume comes out at an orderly pace and the high peaks are not concentrated in a few weeks,” he said. He also stressed that there would be a shortage in the market when avocado production from important suppliers operating in the first months of the year, such as Spain, South Africa, and Israel, contracted; at which point the Peruvian supply will enter the market very well.
Regarding the target markets, he said they expected to grow in the United States or at least maintain the volume shipped to this market in the previous campaign (125,000 tons). "We also expect to continue growing in Asia, which is a very interesting market for Hass avocado but which does not finish consolidating its growth,” he added.
Likewise, Prohass plans to increase shipments to Chile, where in 2022 they registered a fall of about 10% compared to the previous year, totaling 56,000 tons, given the high local supply of fruit. This year, Paredes stated, the country expects to export to this destination at least 10% of total exports (62,400 tons).
Peru has 60,091 hectares of Hass avocado, a percentage of which correspond to young plantations, so production will continue to increase in the coming years. However, the installation of Hass avocados in the country has slowed down because of the national and international context.
