Retail and wholesale markets in Sweden, are seeing elevated fruit and vegetable prices, mainly due to shortages from their main supplying countries, Spain and Italy. According to an update from Tradegardshalle Stockholm and Ewerman AB, two large importers and distributors in Sweden, cauliflower from Italy has arrived in good lots with good volumes from Spain but at a “continued higher price level.”
Bleached celery goes up sharply in price, much depending on the
weather situation in the Murcia area. There is somewhat limited supply of raspberries and blueberries from Portugal and Spain and at a continued high price in Sweden.
Eggplant and zucchini
Warmer weather in southern Spain has caused the flow of eggplant and zucchini to start again. The price picture is now significantly lower than it has been in recent weeks, especially on eggplant.
Pineapples are also not in good supply due to stormy weather. “The delivery of pineapple is delayed and the price picture rises slightly,” reports the companies. For oranges they are going over to the Valencia Late variety from Egypt, where small sizes go down in price. Spain continues with the orange variety Lane Late. Blood oranges are available in bulk, but the fruits are now too large to be packed in nets. Lemons are slightly increasing in price in Sweden.
There are plenty of seedless red table grapes from South Africa available. India starts up with white grapes at the end of the week, prices will then fall slightly. They see steady prices for honey melon and watermelon, while sweet melons are going down slightly in price. The season for pomelo is rapidly coming to an end in Sweden.
Apples - The Italian season is coming to an end. On the Austrian apples, there is expected to be a small price increase in the future.
Avocados – The quantity in small sizes is increasing and prices are slowly going downhill. “Right now we have avocados from Colombia and in 5-10 days the first delivery will come from South Africa. Regarding Spanish avocado fruits, everything rolls on, and here, too, there is a falling price picture of small sizes.”
Beans - There is a shortage of both cutting beans and bobby beans, as very small volumes of sufficiently good quality enter Holland. The situation is expected to continue in the coming weeks. Other beans and peas have a stable supply and price. Italy is up and running within the next few weeks with its first early varieties of peas.
Cucumber - Remains at a high price level and this applies to both filmed and unfilmed cucumber. However, we see a slight brightening, as Dutch production starts with larger volumes.
Ginger - Ginger from China is available, but at a greatly elevated price picture.
Iceberg lettuce - There is still a limited supply of iceberg lettuce, but during week 10 we see a forecast of increased supply again. The quality right now is good!
Peppers - The first green pepper from the Netherlands begins to appear, the other colors take a few more weeks before the start. We are rolling on with Spain and the price picture is going down slightly as it looks now.
Pepper - We see a continued rising price picture for Spanish pepper, especially padron pepper, which in the future will rise sharply in price.
Romanesco - There is still a high shortage of Romanesco.
Romaine Salad – We're seeing a brightening of the lack of romaine lettuce at the beginning of the coming week.
Asparagus – Limited volume of asparagus this week.
Tomatoes – We continue to see high prices for tomatoes and volumes are projected to increase as we enter the month of March.
Turkish goods - On Saturday, the following goods will arrive from Turkey: paprika sivri, carli, dolma, pepper (red and green), radishes in bulk (red and white) and twig tomatoes.
Ecologically grown paprika, tomatoes remain at a high level during week 8 and 9.
EKO Apples – At the end of week 8, we expect a price increase on the EKO Apples Royal Gala. Volumes are decreasing as we approach the end of the season.
