Greenhouse grown strawberry tomatoes make their debut

Although it is still winter in Ontario, Canada, greenhouse production of different varieties of tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, and strawberries remains consistent. With the help of grow lights, greenhouse-grown produce is increasingly available close to 12 months of the year. “We have the largest acreage of grow lights in the Canadian CEA industry,” says Dan Branson, Senior Director of Business and Product Development with Mucci Farms. “As a result, many of our products are grown year-round.”

In addition to Ontario, Mucci Farms also has facilities in the US. “More recently, we have really diversified our Huron, Ohio production after regular assessments of the market and consumer demand.” What used to be an exclusive tomato crop at the onset five years ago has now expanded along with the size of the facility. “At 72 acres, we are now growing a full complement of cucumbers, along with Beefsteak and Grape tomatoes added to our TOV production.”

Savorries
To continue enticing consumers with high-flavor produce, innovation plays an important role and has resulted in the launch of Savorries. These sweet strawberry tomatoes are kept on the vine for maximum flavor and freshness. “They profile as a sweet tomato, but we like to say that they are sweet like a strawberry, savory like a tomato,” said Dan. “We believe the unique shape and flavor profile will be an eye-catcher for foodies and at-home chefs.” This new item will be on display at booth #1043 at Southern Exposure this coming weekend.

In addition, Mucci Farms will be showcasing their award-winning Paper Topseal Reseal package in Orlando. Recently, the packaging was recognized with an Award of Distinction at the 2023 Global PAC Awards. “With retailers ramping up their focus on sustainability, the Paper Reseal package has been gaining a lot of traction,” Branson commented. “The packaging has been thoroughly tested for structural integrity, transportation, and freshness,” he added. “It’s a ‘can’t miss’ for retailers.”

In addition to strawberry tomatoes and award-winning packaging, an assortment of greenhouse-grown products will be on display in Orlando. However, the most important focus of the show will be on building relationships to find synergies that will serve consumers across the North American continent.

The Mucci Farms team is looking forward to SEPC this week. “Despite the immense growth of this show, we really enjoy the intimate nature of the event, which truly allows us to connect with retailers to build a healthier future.”
