A recent report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations showed that world exports of tropical fruits fell by 5% in 2022. Mangos, pineapples and avocados are among the most affected. On the other hand, papaya would have grown 1% in the same comparison.
One of the main reasons for the decline was lower production in Mexico, as a storm in June and dry conditions in the country's main producing regions led to production losses. However, even in Mexico, papaya production has increased, due to the acreage expansion.
Regarding prices, however, the average unit values of these four main tropical fruits are showing a general upward trend. However, this increase in quotations was accompanied by an increase in production costs, due to the higher values of inputs and transport, reducing margins, mainly in the first half of last year.
