Core Fruit, the avocado exporter of producer ZZ2, has for some weeks been exporting early Hass (Maluma) and greenskin avocados to a European market which is presenting a very different picture to last year: avocado supply from Spain and Israel tapered off earlier this year creating a big gap in the early weeks of the season.
“Usually there is a favourable market for the March/April Months. We do everything in our power to get into the market as early as possible to avoid the big Peruvian arrivals, weather permitting."
Strong greenskin market
With Israel’s greenskin volumes substantially down, the greenskin market had a very good start.
As more volume arriving in the market, the prices has come down in the last ten to fourteen days, but still on better levels than last year in the same period.
He notes that the export prices for greenskin avocados are seldom at the same level as Hass prices – unlike at home, where Fuerte avocados are still a preferred variety by local consumers.
Logistics has been challenging, mainly due to the port been wind bound for the last couple of weeks which created a huge back log.
"The last week has shown positive signs and we hope it will keep improving," he says.
