Harvest of watermelons out of the Edinburg, Texas region is expected to start in six weeks. “A mid-May start is about average and so far, we are on track for a good season,” says Jacky Flores with Bagley Produce. Watermelons are the main focus for the company. “The weather has been good, and we hope it will continue to stay that way,” she added. “Everything is up to the climate, but we are excited to get started.”
The Texas watermelon season usually runs for a couple of months, through the end of July. After a short break, production switches to Mexico for fall and winter. “We are currently wrapping up the Mexico season where we harvested from October until just about now.” Altogether, Bagley Produce supplies watermelons for about eight months out of the year.
Although it was a good Mexican season, it wasn’t completely without challenges. “Cooler weather and more rain than usual held production during some weeks,” said Flores. As a result of the weather, production was delayed, and overall volumes were lower this year.
Bagley’s watermelons are distributed to retailers in Texas, but also make their way over to other parts of the country, including New York, Los Angeles, and Detroit. Click on the video below for more information on Bagley as well as their quality control process.
