According to data from the Agri-Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), Michoacan produced 85,848 tons of grapefruit last year, i.e. 5% more than the 81,775 it produced in 2021.
The state of Michoacan continues to be the second largest producer of this citrus only behind Veracruz, which produced more than 278,000 tons of grapefruits in 2022. Michoacan's grapefruit production is concentrated mainly are the Tierra Caliente region, especially in the municipalities of Apatzingan, Buenavista, Tepalcatepec, Tumbiscatio, and in some areas of Bajio.
Since 2018 this crop has maintained a positive pace, its volume has increased by almost 20% during the last five years.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader), Michoacan's grapefruit production has great economic and social importance because it generates employment in the rural communities where it is cultivated and several families headed by women are dedicated to this fruit. According to the most recent census, 142 women and 654 men are in charge of the areas devoted to this crop in Michoacan.
Regarding the start of 2023, the SIAP reports 7,920 tons of Michoacan grapefruit at the end of February, very similar to the 7,966 that were recorded during the same period last year.
