The Fino lemon season is coming to an end as the first Verna lemons are starting to arrive. In this period, there are two different market realities at origin, according to the Lemon and Grapefruit Interprofessional Association (AILIMPO).
"On the one hand, we come across second and third cuts of macrofilas with a high percentage of discards, given the dates in which we are in the case of Fino lemons. The priority then is to harvest the fruit to be able to start with the necessary work to prepare the farm for the next season. Therefore, these lemons are sold at liquidation prices, and reference prices (0.28-0.36 € per kilo) would not apply," said the association.
"On the other hand, there are already some batches of traditional ones that, depending on their use, will be quoted at prices in the indicated range," they say.
All in all, AILIMPO talks about the end of the Fino campaign "without much enthusiasm. The transition to Verna lemons is expected to be completed between late April and early May, and it is advised to exercise caution in a market scenario where the fruit shipments from the southern hemisphere to northern Europe and the United Kingdom, especially South Africa, are expected to start earlier."
