The Kazakh authorities continue to strive to ensure the domestic market is saturated with food. Despite an excess of certain goods, they are faced with aggressive vegetable exports. Onions remain one of the most important crops. Measures are being taken in the country to stabilize prices and provide the population with onion.
Currently, work continues in the country to contract the autumn harvest of 2023 to ensure the period between seasons in 2024 is covered, with around 90,000 tonnes of the product already in place. At the same time, the issue of early imported vegetables, including onions from Uzbekistan, is being worked out.
The Kazakh authorities introduced a ban on onion exports in early January to prevent a shortage on the domestic market and a sharp rise in prices. Later, a three-month ban was then replaced by quotas. According to the Minister of Trade and Integration, Serik Zhumangarin, this measure helped to ensure the population had onions and prevent a sharp rise in prices.
