Harvest has begun on corn out of California though the season is somewhat delayed. “Due to the cold weather and rain that hit much of California, we started harvesting about two weeks later than we did last year,” says Victoria Kovacevich of Prime Time International.
She says Prime Time just began harvesting and expects to have good supply for the next four to six weeks through Memorial Day weekend, a key corn-consuming holiday. The season will finish in early June.
Right now, corn is coming from the Coachella Valley. “Corn is one of our seasonal items and we are always so excited to start harvesting it here in the desert,” says Kovacevich, noting that the company grows both bi-color and white corn.
Increasing temperatures, increasing demand?
Meanwhile, demand is good and as the temperatures warm up outside, it’s a reminder that May is a busy month for most consumers. “Between Mother’s Day, Memorial Day and the excitement of summer, more and more people will be getting together, grilling and spending time outside,” Kovacevich says, noting corn is a staple item in the summer for consumers.
As for prices, they are steady. “Looking ahead, we expect promotable volumes and great quality,” she adds.
