Much automation and robotization in packaging sector

Photo report: Interpack 2023

From May 4 to 10, visitors to Germany's Düsseldorf exhibition center could see the latest gadgets in packaging technology and machines. Numerous applications for fresh food to non-food were covered.

Interpack is not known as a fruit and vegetable packaging platform, and this market segment again had a modest role in this edition. Robotization and artificial intelligence (AI) are gaining noticeable ground across the entire packaging sector.

People from 155 countries, many with set investment plans, visited Interpack 2023 to see the novelties and technology presented by 2,807 exhibitors. That demonstrates proper product packaging's power and creativity.

During our visit to the fair's first two days (Thursday and Friday), it was well attended. The exhibitors unanimously agree that demand for innovative packaging is again increasing significantly.

AI-based systems and robotization, in the broadest sense of the word, are also making inroads. Robotic or fully automated systems have become indispensable, particularly in gripping systems and box handling.

Fruit and vegetable packaging: sustainability still all-important
Until a few years ago, sustainability was the universal key concept regarding fruit and vegetable packaging. It seems, though, that inflation and high raw material prices have pushed produce packaging sustainability into the background. Nevertheless, at Interpack, too, people could again see a selection of innovative packaging based on cardboard, paper, and bio-plastic - a sign that sustainability and environmental friendliness is still a high priority.
