According to information from the Chinese newspaper Science and Technology Daily, a team from the Agricultural University of Southern China led by Professor Chen Riyuan has developed a new blueberry variety that stands out for its caliber (which can exceed 42 mm in diameter), its interesting precocity, and high yields.
The new variety is the product of eight years of research and development and it is very suitable for the humid climate of southern China. Apart from its large size, this new variety has a crispy pulp and an average sugar content that ranges between 12% and 14%, with some berries reaching up to 16.9%, the media reported.
This new variety is expected to reach the market in January and remain available until April when national production usually begins to supply the market until September.
In addition, while most blueberry cultivars take at least three years to bear fruit, this new cultivar only takes a year to reach high production if planted correctly. Its yield is three to four times higher than that of typical cultivars.
To date, 15 production bases have started cultivating the new variety in more than 166 hectares, and numerous fruit shop chains, supermarkets, e-commerce platforms, and fruit exporting companies have contacted Professor Chen's team for possible cooperation.
