China (Guangzhou) - Week 19 Wholesale Fruit Market Report

"Fewer durians, strong apple sales"

In the fruit market this week, the arrival of imported apples increased, and the sales in the second half of the week were satisfactory; the arrival of Thai durians decreased, so buyers expanded their purchases of other fruits, and the sales of some categories increased. In addition, this Sunday is Mother's Day, and due to the festive effect, some fruits are selling faster.

Most of the durians sold in Thailand are from the East. The production peaked before the May Day holiday, and the arrival volume gradually declined after the peak. According to merchants, before the holiday, the daily arrival volume in the market exceeded 200 containers, which has decreased by more than 20% or even more. As the arrivals decreased, the price rose later this week. A box of A6 Monthong Durian was priced at about ¥880-¥900, which was an increase of ¥100/box compared to last week.

"Due to the shortage in the market, the products were still selling smoothly. Some merchants said that as durian production in eastern Thailand enters the end of the production season, many buyers will soon switch to buying Vietnamese Kanyao because of its high cost performance. In addition, the number of palm-sized Thai Monthong Durians has increased.

In addition to Thai and Vietnamese durians, there are small volumes of Philippine Puyat durians shipped by air in the market, and the current price has increased slightly, about ¥750/box (6, 7, 8 heads/box). According to the merchant, because the Philippine durian is a new product in the Chinese market, and its appearance is slightly different from the conventional Thai durian it is currently at the stage of cultivating the market.

Arrivals of imported apples have increased, with more from New Zealand. It is understood that at present, small-sized fruits are better than large ones, and the high price of large fruit is the main reason. Merchants said that due to the local hurricane at the beginning of the year that reduced apple production, the cost of New Zealand apples has increased by about 15%-20% this year.

In addition, according to the estimates of merchants who sell apples from different origins, the arrival of Chilean apples this year may decrease because last year’s sales were not as good as expected; South African apples sold well last year due to their good taste, and this year may increase the volume. The sales of apples in the second half of the week are relatively satisfactory, which may be related to the decrease in the arrival of durians.

Other imported fruits: The Chilean stone fruit season is coming to an end, and most of the fruits currently on sale are Chilean Candy Red plums and Ostrich Egg red plums. Merchants said that due to the recent shortage of plum varieties and quantities, the price has risen, and the current sales are generally smooth.

The price of imported avocados continues to drop. The current price of Kenyan avocados is about ¥90/box, which is about 30% lower than last week. The price of Peruvian avocados is slightly higher than that of Kenyan avocados. Merchants said that the sales of Peruvian avocados are better.

The price of Vietnamese pitaya has been generally stable in the past two months. Merchants said that the sales this week are better due to Mother's Day. A small amount of Vietnamese pitaya is on sale, and merchants say that the sales are average. The best-sellers are still normal red-skinned pitayas.
