Upcoming Polish apple harvest expected to be lower in volumes

As some Polish apple exporters are getting rid of the final stock, others are fully focused on the new upcoming season already. Jan Nowakoski, manager of Polish apple distributor Genesis Fresh, states that the weather conditions have been positive for the new crops: “So far, we’ve had quite good conditions for the cultivation of apples. We’re seeing fewer rainy days this season compared to the previous year around this time. Hopefully, it will not be a dry summer with higher temperatures like it was in Western Europe last season.”

The Polish apple harvest will be lower than it was last year, Nowakowski predicts. Some varieties will have less availability than others. “Despite harvest still being a while off, we can already notice that there will be lower volumes of apples from Poland in the upcoming season, compared to the previous one. Specifically we expect there will be less Jonagold apples, as well as apples of the Golden Delicious variety. Thankfully, we will have good volumes of Royal Gala, it seems.”

Orders for the new harvest are already coming in from various continents, Nowakowski explains: “We’re expecting good demand for Polish apples in the new season. Gala, Golden and Red apples have huge interest every year. The volumes for export also increase every season and we’re able to offer more and more top quality apples for many markets in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America.”

Although there were some very cold nights in Poland about a month ago, there has been no major impact on the crops. However the apples still have a way to go, Nowakowski says: “There was minimal frost during the early spring, which has had little effect on apples this season. Due to the high volumes of last year, the trees are tired and will give less crop this time. Of course, it’s too early to predict the exact figures of the coming apples’ volume. For that, we need to wait until the middle of July.”

“Due to recent temperature changes, we will observe the situation for possibilities of hail storms during the summer and early autumn. This will have an impact of the quality of the apples. The weather conditions, humidity, temperature will have the highest influence on the volume and quality of fruits,” Nowakowski concludes.
