Agricola Famosa -

Brazilian producer extends melon season to offer 12 months supply to Europe

Agricola Famosa, the world’s largest melon and watermelon grower and exporter from Brazil, will now have a guaranteed 12 month supply of melons to Europe. The company is also set to increase exports to Europe by between 10-15% next season. Carlo Porro, CEO of Agricola Famosa: “Right now, because of problems in Spain, we are shipping melons to Europe. We bought several new farms to the south of Brazil. We are managing to produce melons during the whole Central American season and during the Spanish season. We apply new growing techniques and innovations. We can therefore guarantee supply with very good quality throughout this extension of our season.”

Porro says the weekly breakbulk vessels from Brazil to Europe, which they chartered for the first time at great expense during the last season, was a resounding success. There was no delays in departures and arrivals. The quality of their various melon shipments was also better. The due reward in markets followed with better prices.

“We concluded agreements to again have this service from week 34, at the end of August, until week 3, in January 2024. We will have one vessel per week. I believe the quality and service was better in the sense that quality, especially for the varieties of piel de sapo, yellow melons, watermelons, was just superb. It was much better than usual. The transit time was faster while the fruit arrived fresher. This also means we could harvest the fruit in a more advanced stage, this means sweeter fruits. The consumer and client received a better product. Also during the service these vessels work like a Swiss clock. There was no delays on departure and arrival. The service was very good. It was a fantastic complement with our containers,” explains Porro.

Market rewards better quality
“In general we were awarded by the market and for sure in Spain with the better arrival quality of especially the piel de sapo. In the UK was well as in the European continent everyone recognised and rewarded our quality and the service. Because of the success of the service and the breakbulk quality Agricola Famosa will increase the volume for next season by 10-15%. This is a big increase, which is not just because of breakbulk, but also because we are the only ones who can supply Europe for 12 months of the year. This puts us in a unique position in terms of supply,” concludes Porro.
