The Hass Avocado Producers Association of Peru (ProHass), which in March had estimated the country would ship more than 630,000 tons of Hass avocado, has readjusted its Hass avocado production forecast for this campaign to 598,344 tons.
This is only 8% more than the 554,299 tons that Peru exported in 2022, it's well below the 14% that the union estimated up until a few months ago, and it reflects the slowdown in growth that the country has experienced for years.
According to Juan Carlos Paredes, the president of ProHass, this decline is due to the 10 to 15% smaller fruits that are being harvested due to the effects of the La NiƱa phenomenon in 2022.
ProHass expects export will grow by nearly 10% in 2024. In 2023, the union expects demand will remain between 6% and 8% annually nationally and internationally.
Currently, Peru has around 60,132 hectares of Hass avocado, which are managed by a total of 23,675 producers. It is the world's second-biggest Hass avocado exporter, only behind Mexico. In fact, 80% of the avocado consumed in Europe in summer is Peruvian.
