The Western Australian avocado season will get underway in mid-August and packing company The Avocado Collective is looking forward to a good season.
“We have had a great spring and mild summer this season, with almost perfect growing conditions resulting in a higher than expected yield,” said Josh Franceschi, General Manager at the company. “At the moment we estimate that we will pack around 3,000,000 trays at our facility."
The Avocado Collective packs for 74 growers in Western Australia, with growers north of Perth, in Gingin, all the way down to Albany in the south. However, most of their growers are based in Busselton, Manjimup and Pemberton growing regions.
“The domestic market is quite slow moving which isn’t uncommon this time of year. It’s quite cold around Australia and we are just coming out of school holidays which tends to impact trade. Avocados are plentiful with no real relief for the large supply numbers that are flowing through central market systems around Australia. Currently good premium quality avocado trays are selling for $20-24 a tray with expectations this will likely soften in the coming weeks due to the slow trade and large supply numbers.”
Spring and summer trade is expected to remain much the same with large volumes of Avocados to be harvested in the Tri-State, South Australian and Western Australian growing regions.
“It’s a great time to be an avocado lover in Australia with fruit being plentiful and affordable.”
The Avocado Collective will be packing avocados right through to March. At the moment 15% of the avocados packed at the facility are exported, but they are working on increasing that to 30%.
Australian avocados have recently gained access to the Indian market and Josh is very excited about the prospect of exporting there when the protocol is finalised.
