Good demand for Indian mangoes

The mango season picked up steam after a slow start, states Manoj Barai, general manager for Indian fresh produce exporter MK Exports: “Initially the mango export volumes were slow, but gradually it started increasing and at this time we have exported solid volumes of mangoes and different varieties as well. The demand has been excellent and it has been developed very well especially for countries like New Zealand, Sweden, Ireland and Netherlands.”

Barai is happy to see that freight rates have returned to a more acceptable level. “The European markets acted as expected and even better as the freight rates this year were quite stable compared to last year, which enables us to push more volumes of mango shipments. Though we did not really have much of a breakthrough this year for American markets, as we are still in search of a good potential buyer who can take good volumes of mangoes from us.”

Dealing with amount of rain that India has had to deal with during the last few mango seasons has called for a change of strategy, Barai explains: “It’s true that we’re having a lot of incidents with the weather over the last few years, during the mango season. This does affect the quality of the mangoes and in turn reduces export volumes. That is why we have to keep changing our sourcing location to ensure the product we obtain is least affected by the weather conditions. This way, we’ll be able to deliver the best and tastiest Indian mangoes for our customers.”

“For us, the plan is to export the North Indian Mangoes, which season is ongoing. And through this our expectation is to ship some more volumes of mangoes from India to various parts of the world,” Barai concludes.
