California fig harvest started about two weeks ago. “In our south valley fig orchards, the harvest of our main crop began during the first week of August,” says Casey Hollnagel with Vertical Foods. “This is about two weeks later than usual.” The company’s orchards in the northern region started harvest about 10 days later than normal.
The 14-day delay can be attributed to the abundant rain California experienced during the winter and the unseasonably cool weather throughout the spring. “As a result, the trees took longer to come out of dormancy, which in turn pushed back the start dates for both the breba crop and our main crop,” commented Hollnagel.
Despite the late start date, Hollnagel is pleased to report that the size of the fruit is larger compared to previous years. In addition, the season is expected to last longer. “We anticipate reaching peak production in late August and early September, with harvesting continuing through October, weather permitting.”
Very strong demand
Demand is much stronger than in previous years. “This is the result of late start dates not coinciding with programs and promotions retailers had planned. We will continue to be in short supply the entire month of August but should have steady supplies available in September.”
The company offers a variety of figs, including Black Mission, Desert Queen, and Brown Turkey. For the retail business, the figs are primarily packed in clamshell containers, available in 8oz, 16oz, and 32oz sizes. These products are distributed throughout the United States and Canada.
