US: KeHE now primary distributor for Affiliated Foods

Food waste costs grocery stores $28bln every year. Afresh is working to slash that number.
Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons, one of the nation's largest grocers with $78bln in annual revenue, began using artificial intelligence software across stores last year from a startup called Afresh Technologies to help it forecast demand and place orders for the type of food that tends to spoil the fastest, like bananas, bell peppers, and bagged salads. Albertsons is now placing more frequent orders for smaller quantities. "We're trying to have full shelves and an empty backroom when the next truck comes in," said Afresh CEO Matt Schwartz.

US Foods Holding Corp., one of the largest foodservice distributors in the United States, announced results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2023. Second quarter fiscal 2023 highlights: Net income available to common shareholders improved to $182mln. Adjusted EBITDA increased 17.4% to $432mln. Diluted EPS was $0.73; Adjusted Diluted EPS was $0.79. Net sales increased 2.1% to $9.0bln. Total case volume increased by 2.7%; independent restaurant case volume increased by 4.8%.

UK: Farmer says blueberry crop is 'one of the best' despite rainy weather
A farmer has said his blueberry crops are "one of the best" he's ever grown - despite the cold and wet summer weather. Essington Farm has been selling its fresh fruit and vegetables since 1978, with sweetcorn, runner beans, strawberries, and its "famous" sprouts amongst the produce grown on-site. And this year, business partner and farmer Richard Simkin said his blueberry crop is thriving, despite the heavy rainfall that has been seen across the region in recent weeks. Essington Farm - which dates back to 1892 - sells its fresh fruit and vegetables in its farm shop, as well as offering customers a chance to hand-select their produce as part of a "pick your own" service.

A total of 82% of people in Ireland are concerned about food waste in their households, yet 94% are still throwing out food, according to new research from SuperValu. Bananas, apples, and strawberries are the fruit thrown out the most. Lettuce, carrots, and potatoes are the top three vegetables most likely to be binned, SuperValu said.

Britain's M&S raises profit outlook after strong trading
British retailer Marks & Spencer raised its profit outlook, saying it was continuing to win market share in its clothing, home, and food businesses, adding to evidence that its latest turnaround strategy is delivering.
