Week 33 Wholesale Fruit Market Report

American sea freight cherries are on the market, South African oranges arrive in small quantities

American cherries by sea have arrived on the market. According to merchants, the market was relatively good when they first came into the market. The price of some early sea freight was basically the same as that of later air freight. In recent days, the market has dropped, and the price varies greatly depending on the brand and quality. Some merchants said that some seaborne products are not durable in storage, the taste and quality change rapidly, and the price drops day by day based on the storage duration.

Left: Imported cherries; Right: Peruvian Blueberries

Peruvian blueberries are currently arriving in a small number, and are still dominated by the two brands that were available at the beginning of the season last month. Due to limited availability, the price is high. At present, the price of middle-size (16+) fruit is about ¥160/piece, which is higher than in the same period last year. Domestic blueberries are produced in Yunnan and Dandong. The price of Dandong blueberries is relatively high, and the price of large fruits is about ¥110/piece. The elevated cost of imported blueberries is expected to impact sales, yet the constrained supply mitigates any overwhelming market pressure.

Left: South African sweet orange; Right: South African Cambria orange

There are few new arrivals of South African oranges this week, and the sales of high-quality fruits are relatively good, but the overall market and sales are not as ideal. The prices of some brands with strong resilience did not change much. Some merchants said the arrival of South African oranges this season is small, so the overall price is higher than the same period last year, about 15%-30% higher depending on the variety, which affects the sale.

The reasons for the fewer arrivals are, firstly, that weather changes in the producing area are leading to a reduction in production, and secondly, South African oranges can get better returns in other markets, thus reducing the volume of shipments to the Chinese market.

However, high-quality varieties such as Cambria oranges can obtain relatively good prices in the Chinese market, so there is still a certain volume. It is understood that the Cambria that has arrived so far has problems with the fruit shape and peel, while the fruit shape of Witkrans orange is better. Currently, its popularity and price are slightly higher than that of Cambria. In addition, the market for South African mandarins has also declined recently.

Left: Yunnan Zhaotong apples; Right: Domestic blueberries

Yunnan Zhaotong apples are on the market, packed in beautiful gift boxes for the Mid-Autumn Festival. A box of 3.5-4kg #85 big fruit is priced at about ¥80/box, which has not changed much from the same period in previous years. Merchants said that the sales have been slow recently, one of the reasons is that the market for imported apples has declined recently, and some prices are lower than that of Yunnan apples, which has caused an impact. Merchants who import apples said that although the market has declined, it has not stimulated sales, and it is estimated that it will gradually pick up in September.

Left: Plums gift box(3.5kg); Right: Plums gift box (2kg)

Among the seasonal fruits, Xinjiang plums are the most common. Currently, the prices of high-quality fruits have not changed much, about ¥50-¥60/kg. Lower-quality sources have different prices. Plums are available in 2kg and 3.5kg gift boxes, as well as in plastic frames, but more in gift boxes.
