While guava fruit is available year-round for consumers, compared to last year at this time, the supply of the tropical fruit is much more abundant right now. “Supplies peak during the summer time and then demand peaks during the winter,” says Jose Victor Sedano of Sweet Seasons.
Meanwhile demand for the fruit is moderate at this time. “However this will pick up as the heat goes away. Guava demand increases as winter approaches,” says Sedano. (Guava for instance sees greater consumption in December within the Mexican population given it’s used to make a popular holiday punch. Along with beverages, the fruit is also commonly used in foods such as jams or eaten fresh.) “Also, the consumption of guava is always going up because every day, more and more customers learn about this product and its benefits,” adds Sedano.
Pricing more moderate
As for pricing, prices have been lower and more like standard pricing compared to prices found within the first months of the year. “At that time, guavas had been scarce because the region had bad weather,” says Sedano.
Looking ahead, Sweet Seasons is readying for the increasing interest in guava that will come. Meanwhile, the company also continues to add to its exotics lineup with products such as super peppers, mangosteen and more.
