'Trade protocol on track'

Australian growers and Brett Lee prepare to sell avocados in India

Famous pace bowler Brett Lee will again campaign on the subcontinent this summer, as the ambassador for Australian avocados. Currently, Australian growers are eagerly awaiting the final protocol that will open up the market for the first time.

After the trade deal granting access was struck, the first test played out in July, with 10 trial shipments sent to prove the quality of the offering. The 2,000 trays of the Hass variety, or about 11 tons, all came from around Childers in Queensland, some 300 km north of Brisbane.

OF course, India had concerns about Queensland fruit fly (QFF), an insect native to Australia that damages fruit and is difficult to control. Many countries will not import fruit from areas where the insect is found.

Brett Lee: "Throughout my career, I've known how important it is to fuel my body with good food and it is why I am so excited to fuse this with my special connection to India and its unique culture. I look forward to championing the great taste, quality, and versatility of Aussie avocados at home and abroad."
