An Ecuadorian banana exporter, Agroaereo, say they are able to supply the Russian market, but only based on 100% pre-payment. This is due to the challenges of receiving payments from Russia, following the war in Ukraine says Elias Tagle, commercial representative of Agroaereo.
He was attending Asia Fruit Logistica with a booth on the Ecuador country pavilion. Tagle says they are open to do business in China. “We currently export 20 containers to China. We can do more, we have the necessary certifications in place. They must just say and we will provide what is needed to deliver our bananas to this market. We export only premium bananas from our producers in Ecuador to Russia, in Europe we send to Italy and Spain, to the U.S and Latin American countries too.”

Tagle says they work with all the industry associations from Ecuador to meet the different market demands, especially to supply Russia that has been challenging since the war started. Russian banks are excluded from the global payments system making it harder to transact and send payments abroad. This, together with low port calls for ships at the start of the war last year, led to lower volumes from Ecuador to Russia that has now returned to normal levels.
“The Russian market is big for us, we can export up to 50 or 60 containers per week. However, the biggest problem is to obtain the payments from buyers in Russia. We now work with them to provide 100% pre-payment from Russia. If we get the pre-payment from buyers there, then sending to them is no problem,” explains Tagle.
Agroaro is a fourth generation business with a history of banana production and exports based in the Province of Los Ríos, Ecuador. “We also export other products from Ecuador such as ginger, exotic fruits, flowers, cocoa and whatever else is grown in our country,” states Tagle.
