Persimmons out of California’s Central Valley will see a slightly later start to the season. “There will be small amounts of harvesting of persimmons starting maybe around October 9. We’re about five to seven days behind a typical start because of the weather. It’s been this way with many commodities in the Central Valley--they’ve all been behind just a little bit,” says Aron Gularte of Fresh Farms.
Gularte says the crop is a good one this year with great-sized, strong-quality fruit. The volume looks to be comparable to last year and the company will harvest into the early to middle of December.
Demand and supply growing on Fuyu
Fresh Farms grows both kinds of persimmons--Hachiya persimmons, which are used more for baking or cooking purposes, as well Fuyus, which are more the eating variety of fruit. “Fuyu demand is increasing every year so there’s growing production on that variety while Hachiya acreage is not increasing because that demand is more stable,” Gularte says. He thinks that overall, the strong quality of this year’s crop will help fuel current demand.
While exact pricing is yet to be determined, Gularte says the tendency is for there to be slightly higher pricing this year due to the increased costs of production.
