Andrew George with EarthFresh

“We will continue to innovate, no matter what happens in the potato market”

Potato harvest in North America is still underway with a strong supply outlook for this season. “We are also seeing excellent quality and yields across both our Eastern and Western growing regions,” says Andrew George, Senior Director of Canada Sales with EarthFresh. However, it results in a commodity market that is unsettled. “Many new crop regions have had strong yields, which is allowing for good deals to hit the marketplace. We are watching the market closely and expect things to settle in the coming months, once harvest finishes.”

As a result of a strong supply, EarthFresh anticipates to have great availability on all programs this year, both organic and conventional. “We are excited to enter a new season with plenty of promotional volume. It is a fun time of year as we are now developing our promotional retail strategies and food service programs.” Cost inflation has put pressure on demand. “Therefore, a focus on promotions will be a key part of our strategy to keep tonnage moving.”

What helps drive demand are regional programs. Since many of EarthFresh’s new crop shipping regions are in full force, the company has transitioned into regional programs for their customers. “The regional focus in combination with increased availability has helped drive value to our customers,” George said.

Repeat purchases on value-added
Regardless of what happens in the market, EarthFresh is committed to continue innovating. “Consumers have become accustomed to the convenience of value-added products. For our Steam & Go lineup for instance, we are seeing consistent volume and demand, regardless of the market conditions.” For these types of products, consumers come back each week to repeat purchase.

Currently, EarthFresh is in the midst of launching their most convenient product to date, called Fast. Fresh. Gourmet. It is a convenient gourmet line of fresh vegetables and sauces packed in a patented bag that steams and sauces simultaneously in the microwave. “It’s a fast, healthy, and mess-free side dish that people can feel good about eating.” Fourteen different flavors of potatoes, Brussels sprouts, and carrots were strategically developed. Some of the flavors include Jamaican Style Jerk, Thai Style Green Curry, Piri Piri, and Smoked Maple.
