The Brazilian melon export season started really well for Agricola Famosa with a 35% volume increase compared to the same time last season. Carlo Porro, CEO of Agricola Famosa: “We had a great start of the Brazilian season, quality and productiveness are fantastic. Famosa volumes have increased by 35% in comparison with the same period of last season (week 32 to 38) The shortage and quality of European production have of course helped a lot.”
Agricola Famosa bought several new farms and have for the first time harvested and exported melons throughout the European summer. This further cements the company’s status as the world’s largest melon and watermelon grower and exporter from Brazil.
“We are estimating a minimum increase of 25% in volumes if productivity remains as it is, clients are happy with the quality so consumers will be too, I am expecting a good demand since logistic cost is lower, and Madrid will be important to fine tune expectations from both sides, and especially to conclude much bigger volumes on our season extension that goes from week nine to week 20, since our intention is to increase by 50% the volumes in this period. In addition to that we already are concluding deals for 12 months with several costumers,” explains Porro.
U.S. market volumes double
Agricola Famosa also serves the U.S. market where they are doing very well too says Porro. “In the USA we have in program double volumes in comparison of last season. The market is accepting our products very well, especially the Dino and watermelons exclusive varieties.”

Chartered ships continuing to deliver the goods to Europe
Porro hailed the weekly break-bulk vessels from Brazil to Europe, as a great success, which they have continued to charter at great expense since last season. “The break bulk is working very well, we have changed the loading port in Brazil, we are loading from the Port of Natal. The operation there is much faster and as usual these boats are working like a Swiss clock, for all of this I am expecting a great season for Famosa,” he concludes.
