"Egyptian lemon exports reached 100 thousand tons in 2023"

Egyptian lemon exports reached 100 thousand tons this season, says Amr Kadah, export manager at HB Group.

Amr told FreshPlaza: "Egypt enjoys favorable climatic conditions for lemon cultivation, which allows year-round production. The cultivated area is 35 thousand acres, mainly in northern Egypt, and in 2023 we reached 100 thousand tons of exports."

The exporter continues, "The biggest market for Egyptian lemons is Saudi Arabia, which accounts for about half of export volumes. Other Gulf countries also take large quantities and are interested along with Saudi Arabia in the local Baladi variety, also known as Benzhair. This variety is renowned for its unique flavor and aroma, thinner skin, and more intense, acidic taste than other lemon varieties. It is widely produced in Egypt and exported fresh and dried."

Russia comes in 2nd position with around 10,000 tonnes. The Russian market, as well as Eastern Europe, African, and East Asian markets, are interested in the Adalia and Sheairy varieties. There is also a growing interest in the Bearss Lime variety, whose number of farms is increasing, thanks to its good quality and taste. The Egyptian citrus industry has flourished, taking advantage of its favorable climate and fertile soil to produce top-quality lemons and oranges, in great demand worldwide. With these impressive export figures, we reinforce our position as a major player in the global citrus market, making a significant contribution to the country's economy," concludes Amr.
