Supply of pineapple from Costa Rica back up

The supply of pineapple is steady right now. “There’s a lot of product here on the market so we’re seeing pretty good, aggressive promotable pricing,” says Stefanie Katzman, Executive Vice President, S. Katzman Produce, adding that while some product is coming out of Mexico, the majority is from Costa Rica.

Compared to last year at this time, supply and pricing look relatively similar. “Demand is a little bit less but we’ve been seeing that across the board on all products. I think last year was just a phenomenon of a year and people are now tightening their belts a little bit and watching what they spend,” says Katzman.

Pricing back down
This level of supply may look similar to last year at this time but it’s a different picture from even a few months ago. Towards the middle to the end of the summer, pricing was in the high $20s and it’s now back into the low teens. “That was primarily due to a shortage out of Costa Rica at the time. One section started late and the new section started late and then the old section also finished a little early so we were a little short on supply and everything just spiked,” Katzman says.

Pricing is also likely to stay steady. “I think supply will also stay steady and as long as pricing stays where it is and supply does too, I think we’ll move a lot of volume through the supply chain,” says Katzman, who also adds that demand is likely to pick up ahead of the holidays given the fruit is often used in dishes for Thanksgiving and more. “It will be good because there’ll be plenty of supply so there will be promotable pricing straight through the holidays.”
