The producer of Dunlop tires is working on producing a new type of rubber derived from tomatoes. Because tomato enzymes have a reinforcing effect, it is expected that this new rubber will reduce tire wear. Natural rubber is used as a raw material for tires. However, in Southeast Asia, where more than 90 percent of the primary materials are grown, there are concerns that the source is being depleted due to deforestation. Therefore, efforts are being made to find new plants that can replace the existing rubber trees.
