Seasonal favorites like pomegranates, persimmons, cranberries, sweet potatoes, pineapples, potatoes, carrots, and celery were front and center. Football party staples such as avocados, jalapeno and serrano peppers, onions, Roma tomatoes, cilantro, baby carrots, and cucumbers were well advertised, along with chips, beer, and football-themed bakery items.
Total ad numbers this week were 285,800, a 3% increase from last week's total of 277,849. The total for the same week last year was 5% lower than for this year. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 140,247 (49% of all ads), onions and potatoes 30,258 (11%), vegetables 109,125 (38%), herbs 1,160, ornamentals 2,349, and hemp 3,821. The number of ads for organic produce was 45,129, 16% of total ads.
The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included seedless grapes (red at 29% and white at 26%). Significant decreases for fruit included Gala apples (3 lb. bag) and Honeycrisp apples (per lb.), both at 18%, avocados at 18%, and strawberries (1 lb.) at 15%. Significant changes in price for potatoes and onions this week included only a 15% decrease for Russet potatoes (5 lb. bag). Significant increases in price for vegetables this week included only asparagus at 18%.
