Carrot pricing keeps climbing

Carrot supply is very tight at the moment. “There’s low production in all regions this year. Low crop yields combined with lost acreage from weather events means there are just fewer carrots in the market to satisfy demand,” says Rob Giragosian with Kern Ridge Growers, LLC.

Giragosian says the market has been like this for the last three months and could carry on this way until January. “We’re hoping that it will loosen up before the end of the year, but others are saying January, February, possibly even into March.”

Regional production
Right now, carrots from California have lower-than-expected yields and reports indicate Mexico does as well. Other regions also in production currently are Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota and Canada. “We are hearing most regions will finish their crops early this year, and I think that’s when things will get very interesting on supply,” he says.

Not surprisingly, demand is very good right now for carrots. “The market pressure is very strong,” says Giragosian. “I think with less on the market, there will be stronger demand for the Thanksgiving pull but overall movement will be less than years past due to supply.”

This puts pricing at some of the highest levels Giragosian has seen over the last three years. “It’s been increasing over the last six to eight weeks to these levels. It didn’t happen overnight but as supply got tighter and demand got better, pricing climbed with it. All indicators say that pricing will continue to move up,” he says.
