The Moroccan pepper industry is coming out of the bottleneck with crops finally available for export, reports Obeida Mansour, CEO of Universal Peppers.
"Some producers have already harvested and started exporting. At Universal Peppers, we'll be kicking off next week. The season is starting timidly, but we're expecting volumes to peak in December," says Mansour.
The delay in launching the season has left a gap in the market and a big demand, adds Mansour. "Demand showed up big already a month ago, which is not usual at the season's beginning. I expect demand to continue to outstrip available volumes, which predicts higher prices later in the season when it gets colder."
The producer continues, "At Universal Peppers, we already have orders for our entire production, which will go to the German market and then be redistributed in Europe."
Like other early vegetables in Morocco, pepper production was slowed down this season by a heatwave that hit the Souss Massa region and scorched crops, followed by a shortage of seeds and a delay of around a month at the start of the season.
