Gustavo Revelles, from SCA Los Fresnos:

“Artichoke prices started very high, above 3 Euros, and remain stable”

Although the artichoke campaign in Granada, Spain, should have started at the end of September, the heat delayed it until the second week of October. However, as Gustavo Revelles, CEO of Los Fresnos, points out, plant growth has been conditioned by the high temperatures. "The production per hectare is similar to other years; perhaps 15% lower, but not much more."

"We expect to obtain the same volume as in other years, but in general, we see that the acreage has been reduced. This year, the most determining factor behind the reduction of the acreage has been the lack of rainfall, but also the appearance of new pests which are increasingly difficult to fight. Moreover, we see that the profile of producers is changing and new producers are increasingly less inclined to grow artichokes." In fact, the latest data for the 2023/24 artichoke campaign from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food foresee a 34.5% drop in the acreage devoted to this vegetable in Andalusia compared to the previous campaign.

"A pending task for all cooperatives is to encourage producers to continue growing this vegetable; to consider it an option at this time, when other productions have already finished." Because, as recalled by Gustavo, the artichoke campaign lasts until December and is normally a quite interesting campaign. "Also, prices have started very high this year, above 3 Euro per kilo, and remain stable, so we expect a very good campaign."

Thanks to the climatic conditions in the province of Granada, it is possible to take advantage of the interesting market gap for fresh artichokes, and to produce a quality product that has allowed Los Fresnos to obtain the Vega de Granada territorial quality certificate. In fact, it is the only cooperative to have achieved this.

"We have traditionally always worked with regular markets, but little by little, we have been refining our standards, until we have achieved the necessary quality to work with supermarkets; in fact, we are already supplying our artichokes to some chains."

"Los Fresnos is an asparagus specialist, but we are also determined to continue betting on artichokes," said Gustavo.
