Panamanian banana producers announce indefinite strike

The Union of Workers of the Banana, Agricultural, and Allied Companies Industry (Sitraibana) approved an indefinite strike starting yesterday, November 13, to protest against Law 406, which allows the Cobre Panama mine to be explored and exploited for a period of 20 years, extendable for the same period.

They announced that they were not going to work on farms and packing houses until the Law was repealed by the President of the Republic, Laurentino Cortizo.

The union asked Chiquita Panama Llc to understand their decision within the framework of a law that harms the population, stressing that the workers' strike should not be interpreted against the company.

In addition, they asked the Chiquita Panama LLC company to maintain a dialogue with the national government for the repeal of the contract and to understand that the strike is not being carried out against the company.

According to estimates, the strike would generate losses of more than 200,000 bunches of bananas per week.
