Datuk Edward Linggu, Chairman of the Sabah Rubber Industry Board (LIGS), announced the distribution of 1.44 million MD2 pineapple tendrils to 598 participants in the Additional Economic Activity (AET) program, amounting to a total allocation of RM5.6 million for the year. LIGS is dedicated to furthering the development of the MD2 pineapple industry in Sabah, setting a target of 2.5 million tendril plantings by 2025. This commitment is being realized through the AET project, which encompasses various businesses identified for their potential returns.
Highlighting the program's evolution, in 2021, LIGS introduced a new venture involving MD2 pineapple plants, engaging 212 participants. This number increased to 305 participants in 2022. The MD2 pineapple AET project, initiated in 2021, yielded 65 tonnes by July 12 of the current year, with a farm purchase value of RM150,000, showcasing a growing output.
Edward acknowledged the success of MD2 pineapple entrepreneurs under LIGS's guidance, specifically citing three participants from Keningau and Tenom districts who have achieved incomes ranging from RM3,000 to RM6,000 per season. To further support these entrepreneurs, selected individuals have been offered assistance in the form of equipment, aiming to facilitate increased cultivation and expansion of MD2 pineapple farming in the future.
