In October of the year, banana prices in Russia surged to 1.43 euros per kilogram for the first time, as reported by Rosstat. Experts attribute the increase to the weakening ruble and supplier procurement costs. The ruble's decline against global currencies in the summer of 2023 impacted the prices of imported goods, including bananas.
Ecuador, the primary banana supplier to Russia, experienced a reduction in shipments in 2022, but in 2023, exports are maintaining last year's levels.
Despite the decline in wholesale prices that began in November, retail prices remain unchanged. Russian consumers still prefer bananas as the most popular fruit.
