Fruit growers in New Hampshire faced a challenging year as trees and fruit crops were damaged throughout the state. The difficulties for growers began in February when a severe freeze affected New Hampshire and other parts of New England. In some places temperatures dropped quite low, destroying most of the state’s peach and plum crops. A second harmful event occurred in early spring when a freeze hit the state in May after trees had bloomed. It was also a very wet year in New Hampshire and while this did not affect fruit crops, it did harm vegetable crops that some fruit growers produce on their farms.
Due to these events many growers lost entire fruit crops or had limited harvests. There were virtually no peach and plum crops this year, and cherries and pears harvests were variable. Notably, many orchards were unable to market apples this year. Despite these setbacks, the industry and its growers are doing the best they can.
