Mexican authorities warn that some fruits imported from the US may be contaminated with "Listeria"

The Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) has reported that the peaches, plums, and nectarines of the HMC Farms brand might be contaminated with the Listeria monocytogenes bacterium, after the HMC Group Marketing INC company withdrew these products from the US market for the same reason.

This health authority issued a risk warning to alert the population that these products were imported into Mexico from the United States between May 1 and November 15, 2023. It also asked consumers to review the labels before purchasing the aforementioned fruits and to avoid purchasing any product that falls under any category within the following table:

According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), listeriosis usually has an incubation period of one to two weeks, but it can extend up to three months in these vulnerable groups, who develop symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, sepsis, and meningitis.

Cofepris recommends that, in case of presenting any symptoms after having consumed any of these foods, you should visit a health professional.

Cofepris has also asked people to corroborate that the products have a label and, if it corresponds to any of the labels above, not to purchase the product and inform authorities of the situation.

If you purchased these fruits from the HMC Farms brand, you should avoid consuming them and clean the areas where you had contact with the food, to prevent the spread of the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria to other foods or products.

This federal commission will continue to carry out health surveillance actions and inform the population as needed to prevent any health risks to the population.
