Contraband avocados found on UAE supermarket shelves

Stakeholders have expressed alarm over reports of contraband avocado exports from Kenya making their way to supermarkets in various cities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), including Dubai.

The Avocado Society of Kenya (ASK) has disclosed that unscrupulous traders have been shipping immature avocados, disguised as mangoes, to the UAE in violation of a ban imposed by the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) in November.

ASK has issued a call to UAE supermarkets, urging them to promptly remove these contraband avocados from their shelves. The society has emphasized that avocados intended for consumption should have a dry matter content of at least 24 percent. It warns that avocados displayed in UAE supermarkets are at risk of rotting due to increased moisture.
