Eating 12 grapes at 12 o'clock at night on New Year's Eve goes viral

The New Year's Eve tradition of eating grapes for good luck, popular in Spain and Latin America, is going viral on TikTok. Originating in 19th-century Spain, the custom involves eating 12 grapes at midnight, with each grape symbolizing good luck for one month of the coming year.

People must think about the significance of each grape as they eat it at each chime of the clock. In a modern twist, some are combining this with the Latin American tradition of sitting under a table while eating the grapes. One TikTok user shared a success story of getting engaged nine months after following the tradition. Another praised the practice, but caution is advised to avoid choking while eating a grape for each of the final 12 seconds of the year. There's a belief that not performing the ritual correctly could bring bad luck.
