The supply of Brussels sprouts looks good with Christmas, a popular sprout-eating holiday, around the corner. “It’s good supply but there’s also good quality because we’ve had some great weather here,” says Matt Yeoman of Valley Pride Sales. "For us, that supply right now is coming from Washington." California is also in production with sprouts.
The volume coming from Washington is about on par with last year at this time. “The season is probably not going to go as long as it did last year. It’s probably going to go into that second week of January,” says Yeoman.
Quality and demand
As for demand, it too has been good this season--before Christmas, Thanksgiving is another popular holiday that often features Brussels sprouts. “Demand has been up for those holidays and we’re generally finding demand a bit stronger this year. I think the quality we have has translated into more demand,” says Yeoman. After the holidays, demand is anticipated to settle back down to pre-holiday levels until the Washington season is finished.
Even with strong demand, the pricing on Brussels sprouts is about the same as last year right now. “It was a little bit stronger earlier in the season and it’s come off a little bit but it’s still about on par with last year,” says Yeoman. “I think after Christmas, pricing will stay fairly stable because we’re not going much further than Christmas.”
